September 2010

Bit late this month.  I'm not in the shop at the moment - I'm having a couple of weeks away.  I'm at the Sunshine Coast, sitting in a unit overlooking the ocean, watching the waves, listening to the birds and taking it easy.  We are staying at Moffat Beach.

This is where all the large ships wait, while they are lined up to enter the Port of Brisbane.  At night, the horizon is a line of twinkling lights - so pretty.

I have already written this newsletter once before, completed it, tested it, put in all the pretty pictures. When I tried to send it, something went wrong and I lost everything. So it has taken me a few days to redo what I had previously done. That’s life!

My husband Andrew was with me for the first week so not too much sewing done. He had to go home half way through the two weeks, so I’ve had a bit more time to concentrate on the sewing.

Of course I have my trusty sewing machine with me.  Lots of cutting and stitching.  I’ve had lots of fun. I’ve taken all the pictures with my iPhone and downloaded them to my laptop, so hopefully they are OK.

This wall hanging has been waiting for a while.  I had previously made all the ornaments and quilted this Christmas wall hanging.

It’s been sitting for weeks waiting to be bound and now it is finally finished.

This is the latest Nancy Halvorsen Christmas Panel - Good Tidings.

I've stitched a quilt top from an Atkinson Design pattern - Firescape.

The pattern cover is shown on the left.  On the right is mine - I've done it in Blues and  Purples with bright orange for my contrast - yum!  The photo doesn't do it justice!  Mine is a lap size quilt- 60" x 72" or 1.5m x 1.8m - it takes 5 x 90cm cuts and 70cm for the contrast.  The binding is made from the leftovers of the 5 main fabrics.

I've made two new cloth books for those special little people in your life.

What's in the Ocean is a counting book.  High Low Fast Slow is a book about opposites.

I brought up one of the new Moda Candy Boxes.  One box contains 160 rectangles 2.5" x 5" from 4 different ranges (40 per range).  There are 2 versions - dark chocolate (warm, darker colours) or white chocolate (light, soft, brighter colours).  I brought a dark chocolate box with me.  It also contains a pattern booklet with projects ranging from small quilts/runners using 1 or 2 Candy Bars to full size quilts, using 4 or 6 Candy Bars.

I also brought some backgrounds with me and have completed this quilt top - it just needs a border, an iron and some quilting!  What you can see is about half of the top at the moment - it is hanging over the back of the lounge.  It is very quick as at least half of the cutting has been done for you.

I've also made a project from the book Bed Runners using Precut Fabrics.  This book is designed for all sorts of precuts from Fat Sixteenths through to Layer Cakes.  Bed Runners are a great idea if you don't have the time or facilities to make a full size quilt.  I decided to make the Story-Time Pockets from the book.  Mine has been done in Spring Fever - lovely and bright and happy.  The two pictures below show the top with empty pockets and then with a book in one pocket.  This would be a great gift for your favourite little person - they can keep their special toy or favourite book close by - the top has 4 pockets.

I've also been working on a charity quilt for our charity quilt group - still needs a final border.  This quilt was started during one of our monthly meetings.  The quilt will be going to the Mater Mothers hospital for the long stay mums.  Our Charity Quilt Group meets at the shop twice a month.  If you would like to know more, just contact us.

And I am making a quilt to say thank you to a lovely lady who has been a great help to me over the last few months.  Every Thursday, I do some volunteer work in an office and this lady has been so very helpful to me, even though it has created extra work for her.  So I'm making her a quilt to say thank you.  Mind you I've never met her so I have no idea what her tastes are but hopefully she'll like it - we only ever communicate via e-mail.  An inner and outer border will finish this off - it looks so busy in this little photo - not quite so busy full size.

I've got lots more stitching I want to do but I seem to be running out of time.  I go home tomorrow.  Never mind - it was great while it lasted!

WHAT'S NEW

We have a great new Kit called 13 Owls - it is terrific.

Everyone who sees just loves it.  If you like Owls, then don't miss this one.

For the little people in your life, you can't go past our quick and easy Alpha Buddies Flannel Quilt.

We have also received more Return to Romance flannels, so we have more stock of the beautiful Winter Romance Flannel Medallion Quilt.

We have also kitted this quilt in softer colours, still flannel, and called it Spring Romance.

We have received the full range of Lumiere from French General.

If you have been working with Rouenneries but are having trouble sourcing the range (we still have a few pieces left), then the new Lumiere works back very well with Rouenneries.

We also have pre-cuts of the latest French General La Petite Ecole.  There's lots more listed in the just in - New New New department.

GOOD BUYS

We have added another 200-300 fabrics to our Good Buys 25% off fabrics.  Minimum cut of 0.5 metre for a 25% discount - can't go past that!
