Indigenous Australians are one of the oldest native people on earth with traditions and customs going back to approx. 50000 years. Their belief system is built on their value and respect towards the land and dreamtime. Though their dreaming about land changes between different groups, the idea of creation from their ancestors, stays similar; ancestors and forefathers sprang up from underneath the soil as spirits and started building mountains, rivers, waterholes, trees and gardens for future generations. These ancestral spirits are considered as the creators and they are part of their day to day life. Aboriginals believe death is a transition to another life, where they consider the spirit taking a different form of life after death. Spirits / souls of these ancestral beings are transferred to a different shape such as a tree, river, mountain, garden etc. Annette Doolan comes from Santa Terese of Central Australia. She belongs to the Doolan family and speaks Arreente language. Her dreaming's mainly involve Seven Sisters, Dancing Spirits, Spirit Dreaming etc.
Janet Long Nakamarra
For the Aboriginal People of Australia, their country is more than a place to live. Every mountain, river, waterhole, tree, animal etc. are part of their dreaming. Per the Aboriginal dreaming, it is believed that all these things are created by their ancestors, who live in the five elements of nature - air, land, water, sky and fire. As different countries have different languages the traditions and rituals differ. Aboriginal people strictly follow an unwritten law of caring for the land, animal, bush etc. of their country, to pass them on to newer generations. Often a place with rock art, waterhole, and wild bush is referred to as a Creek where the Aboriginal women gather to either find food, fetch water or perform a ceremony or ritual. The artists engrave their dreamings on mountains and/or rocks as a message to future generations and also to pass on their skill. Janet Long Nakamarra comes from Utopia region of Central Australia. She belongs to Nakamarra family and speaks Anmatyerre language. Her dreamings mainly involve Fire Dreaming, Underground Water, Sandy Creek etc.
